ABRAHAM ELLSTEIN
Great Songs of the Yiddish Stage, Vol. 1

(with the Vienna Chamber Orchestra conducted by maestro Elli Jaffe)

"The performances are nothing short of terrific. The Milken Archives have done things up with a ribbon and a bow. Nothing chintzy here. The singers all know how to put over a song, and, amazingly...Elizabeth Shammash, Nell Snaidas, and Amy Goldstein play the ingenue in love, each from their own point of view...One of my favorite Naxos discs. I'm on the lookout for volume 2."

"Amy Goldstein is gorgeous in a romantic duet with Simon Spiro from Ellstein's 1946 Second Avenue Theatre musical, 'Ikh Bin Farlibt' ('I'm in Love')."

"It is much too common to view the Holocaust simply as a kind of horrible statistic -- millions dead in Nazi gas chambers. Gershon Kingsley's CD "Voices From the Shadow" avoids this problem. It is a cycle of 17 songs, with texts in various languages (with translations) written by prisoners in the death camps. It introduces us to a 16-year-old girl (sung by soprano Amy Goldstein) dreaming of her first dance and waking up "still a captive."  The statistics become individuals, and all the harrowing, intensely human reality of the Holocaust overwhelms the listener."
